The plot is similar to that of Undertale, wherein the protagonist falls into an underworld of monsters and has to somehow find a way home. Another important aspect of the game is that it is part of a bigger, yet to be released series. While the graphics and imagery are old, the references and humor that you’ll come across are quite modern, firmly placing Deltarune in this century. It even has throwback music to support the classic design. Modeled after 8-bit games like Mario and Metroid, Deltarune’s layout is a trip down memory lane.
Instead of thinking of Deltarune as a prequel to Undertale, players should see it as more of a spin-off. Apart from Undertale’s soundtrack and sense of humor, everything else is fresh. Though some old characters do make an appearance, they’re only in supporting roles. The game is set in a different world, with another storyline and new characters.
While most people assume Deltarune to be the prequel or sequel to Undertale, it is anything but. It stayed that way until Toby Fox announced the release of Deltarune on Twitter. Undertale became a huge success, with a fandom that began participating in development. The character that you chose had to find its way home, after falling into an underground and hidden monster world.
